What Is The Purpose Of A Dry Riser?

A dry riser is a series of pipes and valves found in buildings over 18 metres tall that work to assist firefighters by providing water to each necessary floor. Buildings this tall are often impractical for the fire brigade and can have poor access, so a dry riser is necessary to save time and resources in an emergency. Dry risers are usually kept empty, with the exceptions being during an emergency and during annual testing. Extremely effective and time saving, dry risers have a track record of saving lives during an emergency. Like any fire equipment, dry risers are required by law to go through regular testing, including hydraulic testing, to make sure everything is in working order.

How Do You Pressure Test A Dry Riser?

You pressure test by using a hose that has been approved by the fire service and pump the system with water to a pressure of 12 bar, for around 15 minutes, this tests the system for any leaks.

Who is Responsible for Dry Riser Testing?

The person responsible for dry riser testing is the person in charge of the building for example the landlord, the owner of the property or the facility manager. They should show where the dry riser is located and have the proper evidence to show that it has been tested annually.
